THINGS TO DO

Safaris

We conduct bow- and rifle safaris on separate concession areas.
Rifle Hunting

Gun hunting area covers an excess of 35 000 acres. Hunting is done by spot and stalk and tracking. Shots are very seldom further than a hundred and twenty yards! Some species like; Mountain Zebra, Springbok and Black Wildebeest are hunted on separate concessions in central Namibia.

Bow Hunting

Bowhunting is conducted primarily on our own property which covers an area of 13 000 acres.

Although stalking is possible on some species, most bow hunting is done from blinds, overlooking water holes. We have a total of seven blinds (three pit and four elevated)  Blinds are very spacious which allow for observers as well as taking videos of your shots.  Blinds are spacious enough to accommodate traditional hunters as well.

Observer

An observer can either accompany a hunter or go for walks, do some birdwatching, enjoy the Namibian sun, read, paint, sleep, and some evenings go on a sundowner combined with a game drive.

The Curios shopping can be done in Windhoek at the craft market.

Etosha, Okavango & Busmanland Visits

A day visit to a Bushman cultural villages can be arranged.

Travelling to the Etosha National Game Reserve is also possible, although a one night stay is advised for the best experience.

Another option is the Mahango Game Reserve located on the banks of the Okavango River. This visit includes a visit to an Okavango cultural village with a real African feel, this would take 1 to 2 nights stay.

CLIENT REVIEWS

I have bow hunted with traditional archery equipment for forty-five years, and hunting in Africa had always been one of my fantasies.  After a lot of research, I found that Makalaan Outfitters in Namibia was a better bargain than several outfitters in other African countries, so I booked a hunt.  My wife was excited as I was because she had wanted to see Africa since she was a small girl.  Namibia is a very safe country and inoculations were not required.

The hunt far exceeded our expectations as we had close encounters with many animals each day.  Our native tracker helped me select beautiful trophy animals within my self-imposed shooting range, and each of my animals was recovered within a short tracking distance.  Studying shot placements before we left really paid off because the heart and lungs of African game animals are in the shoulder area unlike American game animals.  My wife accompanied me every day on my hunts, taking photos and video for the DVD that we created.  We experienced the life and culture of Africa and we became friends with Antonie and Melinda Louw who were excellent hosts.  The Louw’s accommodations and table fare were excellent and they have a very professional staff.  Evenings were spent eating wild game and visiting around a fire getting to know each other.

My pre-trip packing list could have been better, but experience is the best teacher.  Since our trip, I have provided a complete packing list as well as travel tips and information to other bowhunters, which relieves a lot of stress and makes the trip more enjoyable.  Life is about making memories and our trip to Namibia, Africa enriched our lives.

If Africa is not on your bucket list, get a new bucket.  Give yourself a gift and make your own memories with Makalaan Outfitters in Namibia, Africa.  A story of my hunt can be found in the Winter 2018 issue of TradArcher’s World.
